Ask us about Dry Needling
Benefits of Ultrasound-Assisted Dry Needling at Swift Rehabilitation
What it is
Ultrasound-assisted dry needling combines real-time ultrasound imaging with skilled dry needling techniques. The clinician visualizes muscles, tendons, nerves, and fascia while guiding a fine sterile needle to targeted areas such as trigger points, scar tissue, or symptomatic lesions.
Key benefits
Increased accuracy and safety
Real-time visualization ensures the needle reaches the intended structure while avoiding blood vessels, nerves, and lungs. This is especially valuable for deep muscles, complex anatomy, or patients with prior surgeries or scarring.
Better targeting of pathological tissue
Ultrasound helps distinguish active trigger points, fibrotic tissue, and areas of tendon degeneration so treatment can be directed precisely where it will be most effective.
Improved outcomes for deep or complex conditions
Conditions involving deep muscles (e.g., piriformis), pelvic floor dysfunction, and some tendinopathies may respond better when needling is guided by ultrasound versus blind techniques.
Reduced patient discomfort and anxiety
Knowing the clinician can see the needle and the target structure often reduces patient fear. Precise placement can also minimize repeated needle passes and associated soreness.
Faster recovery and functional improvement
By accurately treating the source of pain or restricted tissue, patients frequently experience quicker reductions in pain, improved range of motion, and faster return to activity compared with unguided needling alone.
Objective documentation and progress tracking
Ultrasound imaging documents baseline tissue appearance and post-treatment changes. This allows clinicians to track healing, adjust treatment plans, and communicate progress with patients and referring providers.
Enhanced safety in higher-risk patients
For patients with altered anatomy from surgery, significant adiposity, or vascular concerns, ultrasound guidance reduces complications and increases confidence in delivering effective care.
How Swift Rehabilitation applies it
Experienced clinicians: Our therapists are trained in both musculoskeletal ultrasound and dry needling, integrating imaging and needling skills for precise interventions.
Individualized treatment: We use ultrasound findings plus clinical assessment to tailor needling depth, angle, and adjunct therapies (manual therapy, exercise, modalities).
Integrated care pathway: Ultrasound-assisted dry needling is used as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation plan—pre- and post-surgical care, sports injury recovery, industrial rehabilitation, and chronic pain management.
Who benefits most
Athletes and active adults with focal muscle or tendon injuries
Patients with deep or complex pain sources (pelvic floor, hip, shoulder)
People with prior surgeries or scar tissue limiting blind needling
Workers undergoing industrial rehabilitation needing precise, safe interventions
Patients seeking faster functional recovery and objective progress tracking
What to expect during a session
Clinical evaluation and informed consent
Ultrasound assessment of the symptomatic area
Aseptic technique and local anesthesia or topical numbing if appropriate
Ultrasound-guided needle placement with brief therapeutic needling maneuvers
Post-procedure guidance: activity modification, home exercises, and follow-up plan
Safety and evidence
Ultrasound guidance reduces procedural risk and increases accuracy. Current evidence supports improved targeting and potential for better outcomes in select conditions when compared to blind techniques. Swift Rehabilitation combines evidence-based protocols with clinician expertise to maximize benefit and minimize risk.
If you’d like an evaluation to determine whether ultrasound-assisted dry needling is appropriate for your condition, schedule an assessment at Swift Rehabilitation.
Areas of Practice
Physical Therapy
Physical Therapy is concerned with prevention and management of movement disorders arising from conditions and diseases occurring throughout the lifespan. Physical therapy is performed by either a physical therapist or a physical therapist assistant under the direction of a physician.
Pre and Post surgical care
Research supports pre-operative care by a physical therapist prior to surgical intervention to improve surgical recovery and to help to achieve post-surgical rehabilitation success. Post-surgical physical therapy facilitates patients to return to their prior activities without compromising their surgical repair, correction or replacement.
Spine Rehabilitation
Two popular exercises for strengthening the back are McKenzie exercises and Dynamic Lumbar Stabilization. These exercises are typically learned with the help of a physical therapist, who can show how to perform them correctly for better results in strengthening or relieving back pain. While each exercise targets specific issues, they can also be used together when suitable.
Sports Performance
Athletes require a particular approach to conditioning and post-injury rehabilitation depending on the physical demands of your specific sport. At Swift Rehabilitation we have physical therapists with backgrounds in a variety of different sports, including dance, baseball/softball, basketball, football and golf.
Industrial and Occupational Rehabilitation
We work with your employer, your workers compensation provider, your case manager, as well as your doctor to facilitate full recovery and return to full duty after a work related injury. We also provide ergonomic assessments, on-site evaluations and lift training in order to prevent work related injuries.
Dry Needling
Dry needling has gained considerable attention in the realm of physical therapy as an effective treatment for myofascial pain. This technique involves the insertion of thin needles into trigger points—tight bands of muscle that cause pain and discomfort. In the text below, we’ll explore the science behind dry needling, its benefits, costs, and compare it with other treatments, all supported by research and data.
